Tate Multimedia is just a little bit giddy to announce that, more than 20 years after his debut, Kao the Kangaroo will be making a triumphant return to platforming action on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam this summer.

Kao - pronounced K-O - will be familiar to any fans of 3D platformers in the early noughties, having made his debut on SEGA’s legendary Dreamcast back in the year 2000. Now, two decades on, Kao is back in business and about to embark on his biggest adventure yet, setting out to find his missing sister and solve the mystery of what happened to his long-lost father.

Players will join Kao as he picks up his magical boxing gloves and travels the world confronting famous fighting masters who are under the influence of disturbing, dark power, all while exploring a colourful and vibrant world alive with activity and visual flair.

“It’s really exciting to finally be able to say to people that, yes, we will be launching Kao the Kangaroo this summer,” says Kaja Borowko, Head of Studio. “Throughout development, it’s been important to us to make sure Kao’s new adventure both feels like a tribute to his previous outings for existing fans, as well as a fresh, contemporary platformer for newcomers. This is not a sequel, this is a complete reboot, and we can’t wait to see players young and old come together to take on the role of Kao once more this summer.”

The original Kao the Kangaroo series collectively sold more than 700,000 units worldwide, with four games in total having launched across PC, PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and the aforementioned SEGA Dreamcast.

In his latest adventure, Kao will use his boxing gloves to punch a path through his adversaries, jabbing his way through the obstacles ahead as he pummels his way to glory.

      Kao the Kangaroo will feature:
      • Beautiful, diverse worlds, packed with secrets
      • Engaging and fun gameplay for all ages - family-friendly, but for core gamers too
      • Magic gloves stacked with powers
      • Kao - a cheeky, brave, and feisty kangaroo who embarks on a life-changing journey
      • An engaging story filled with a cast of captivating characters
      • Challenging combat including unique boss battles
      • A whole host of items to collect

    • Ab 21 Februar eine frische Demo zu Kao the Kangaroo - aber wohl nur auf PC/Steam!?

Just weeks after lifting the lid of his return, Tate Multimedia is excited to announce that the very first demo of Kao the Kangaroo will hit Steam’s Next Fest celebration taking place between February 21-28, 2022.

The brand new demo will include an exclusive look at one level - Dark Forest - offering up to 40 minutes of gameplay, depending on your playing style. It’ll be fans’ first chance to experience Kao’s return, more than two decades after he made his debut on SEGA’s legendary Dreamcast.

“We cannot wait to see players take on the Kao the Kangaroo demo,” says Kaja Borowko, Head of Studio. “The reaction we saw after the last trailer went out has blown us away, and so now seems like the perfect time to let people in on the action ahead of the game’s release later this summer.”

    • Tate Multimedia can today confirm that, more than 20 years after his debut, Kao the Kangaroo will make its return on Friday 27th May, 2022.

Setting out to find his missing sister and solve the mystery of what happened to his long-lost father, players will join Kao as he picks up his magical boxing gloves and travels the world confronting famous fighting masters who are under the influence of disturbing, dark power, all while exploring a colourful and vibrant world alive with activity and visual flair.

“We’ve been blown away by the response we’ve had from gamers since we announced Kao the Kangaroo was making a return earlier this year,” says Kaja Borowko, Head of Studio. “With this new chapter, we’ve set out to make sure the new Kao the Kangaroo both honours his previous outings and offers fresh, contemporary gameplay for fans new and old alike. This is a complete reboot for Kao, and we can’t wait to see how people take to it at launch!”

Kao the Kangaroo will launch digitally and physically on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam for a digital price of €29.99/$29.99/£24.99 and a recommended physical price of €34.99/$34.99/£29.99

Tate Multimedia is excited to announce a partnership with renowned UK developer and publisher Playtonic Games to unite celebrated platformer Yooka Laylee with its own marvelous marsupial Kao the Kangaroo in a free update available on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam from today.

This brand new DLC will enable players to take on the entirety of Kao the Kangaroo as Yooka, whilst those on Steam will also be able to pick up a Yooka Laylee x Kao the Kangaroo bundle, enabling them to play both games for 20% less than their standard combined RRP. Indeed, gamers who already own one of the two titles will also be able to buy the second with 20% off the RRP.

“This is a significant moment for platforming fans,” says Magda Schwarzer, Head of Marketing at Tate Multimedia.

“Yooka Laylee rightly won praise and plaudits from critics and gamers alike when it made its debut in 2017 because it took the spirit of 3D platformers of old and brought it into the present day. It’s a joy to be able to unite a modern classic like this with our very own Kao, who has been on a very similar journey from old to new. We think players are going to love it.”

The launch of this new DLC comes just weeks after the previous update - Dubbed “Oh! Well” - added five new playable Eternal Wells to conquer and five scary skins to unlock, serving as the perfect way to give yourself a scare just in time for Halloween.

Both the free Yooka Laylee update on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, and the Yooka Laylee x Kao the Kangaroo bundle on Steam launch today.
