Yars Rising — the upcoming Metroidvania prequel to Yars’ Revenge from studio WayForward — opens physical edition preorders today for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Starting today, fans can pre-order their preferred version from Amazon globally, Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart in the United States, and a broad list of retailers in Europe, The Middle East and Asia.



In Yars Rising, players take control of the young hacker Emi Kimura, who is hired by a mysterious patron to infiltrate the shadowy Qotech corporation. Run, jump, sneak, and hack your way through challenges to unravel layers of intrigue in this expansive sci-fi mystery. Embark on Emi’s journey to decipher the mystery of the corporation’s closely guarded secret and uncover her inexplicable bond to a far-off alien race.

Developer WayForward Technologies has built a reputation for developing franchises featuring strong characters and rich storytelling. In Yars Rising, the studio delivers a side-scrolling Metroidvania adventure with platforming action, a balance of stealth and combat gameplay, and retro-inspired mini-games.

Yars Rising is slated for release on Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PlayStation 4 & 5 later in 2024.

Atari released globally today the first full-length gameplay trailer for Yars Rising, the stealth-based Metroidvania take on one of Atari’s richest classic titles.

Revealed at IGN Live 2024, the all-new gameplay trailer shows off the vivid world of Yars Rising, punctuated by anime-inspired cyberpunk character designs, an energetic soundtrack, and a look at the game’s stealth mechanics and enemy encounters. What starts off as a simple ‘get in, get out’ mission quickly turns into more than what the young hacker Emi bargains for— from blasting robots to dodging lasers, to hacking complex systems and acquiring bio-hacks that grant unexpected abilities.

The Yars universe is preparing to expand even further, as Atari and developer WayForward announced today an official single-issue companion comic book titled “Yars Rising.” The comic is a prequel to the upcoming sci-fi metroidvania video game Yars Rising coming to PC and consoles on September 10, 2024. The 32-page comic will be available online and in traditional comic book retail stores in November.

Yars Rising is the latest offering in a 40-year-old video game franchise that began in 1982 with the release of Yars’ Revenge for the Atari 2600 home console. In an industry first, Atari paired the game cartridge at retail with a comic book. The comic gave players a view into the expansive backstory behind the 8-bit game and set the stage for their on-screen campaign.

Written by Wayforward Game Director Adam Tierney, Yars Rising acts as a prequel to an entirely new Yars story that unfolds within the video game. The comic follows the lead character, professional hacker Emi Kimura, as she and her friends try to navigate the ramifications of a job gone horribly wrong. As the story progresses, readers are given a taste and perhaps some subtle hints about what awaits them in the game.

Yars Rising features the creative talents of artists Ele Bruni (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tea Time, Space Opera), Ashleigh Hetrick (Art Director, WayForward), and Aurora Maeno.
