In all the rush to work on it, Psygnosis, the game's publisher, forgot to close negotiations with the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile). The FIA accused Psygnosis in court of illegally placing its logo on the game's packaging. After analyzing the case files, the court ordered the suspension of its sales. Psygnosis had to act quickly and decided to correct the game's covers, removing the aforementioned FIA logo. However, it was not such a big loss, because most of the first-edition copies of the game had already sold out by that time. This can be seen even today in online auctions, where almost all copies of the game have the FIA logo on the cover.


Even legislative problems did not prevent Formula 1 97 from being a success and the game, like its predecessor, sold in huge numbers, even breaking the world record for the number of copies sold of a single game (released on CDs) on the day of its debut.
