After much deliberation and with deep sadness, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer today announces his retirement from his playing career.

The decision was reached after continuing problems with his knee injury. Ole will remain at the Club in a coaching capacity and will represent Manchester United as an official Ambassador.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "I would like to thank the Manager, the coaching and medical staff and most of all the supporters, who have supported me through my career. They have been fantastic and were a real inspiration to me when I was out injured.

"The support the fans and the staff showed me during that time was the main motivation for me making my comeback. I feel proud to have represented Manchester United for 11 years and have some very special memories.”

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Ending your playing career is a sad day for anyone, in the case of Ole, he has 11 fantastic years he can look back on.

"Ole has achieved everything a player could ever wish to achieve. He has been a great servant to the Club and has always remained a model professional in his responsibility as a player, in his demeanour and his manners have always been exemplary. Ole will hopefully go on to be a good coach.”

David Gill said: “Ole has provided us all with some exceptional memories during his time here at the Club.

"Nobody will ever forget his dramatic winner in Barcelona, but much more than that his dedication and professionalism make him one of the great role models in football. Ole will be dearly missed as a player, but will go on to serve the Club as an Ambassador and a valuable coach.”

Ole's United Honours

Mourinho leaves Chelsea
Chelsea have confirmed that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club.

The Barclays Premier League side reacted to speculation over the future of the Portuguese coach by revealing the two parties had agreed to part company on Wednesday by mutual consent.

Mourinho is understood to have contacted five senior players on Wednesday afternoon to inform them of his departure and by midnight the entire first team squad were aware of his departure.

Peter Kenyon, the club's chief executive, Bruce Buck, the chairman, and Abramovich's key aide, Eugene Tenenbaum, were called to an emergency meeting at Stamford Bridge to discuss the emerging crisis.

Former Israel coach Avram Grant, recruited in the summer as director of football, is expected to take charge of the side for Sunday's Barclays Premier League match with Manchester United.

A statement on the Chelsea website confirmed: "Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have agreed to part company today (Thursday) by mutual consent."

Mourinho led the club to two Barclays Premier League titles after joining the club in June 2004 and still had three years left on a contract.

At the time he signed that deal, Mourinho said: "My heart is with Chelsea and the fantastic group of players that I have but the vision of the owner and the board for the future of Chelsea is also one I want to be a part of. I cannot imagine another situation or another club where I could be happier. I am totally behind this project."

The Blues are currently fifth in the Barclays Premier League, two points behind leaders Arsenal after six games.

Mourinho's best quotes
Jose Mourinho treated the football world to a number of entertaining quotes during his stint as Chelsea manager.

"Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion and I think I'm a special one" - Mourinho introduces himself to the English press after arriving from Porto in summer 2004.

"We have top players and, sorry if I'm arrogant, we have a top manager."

"If I wanted to have an easy job... I would have stayed at Porto - beautiful blue chair, the UEFA Champions League trophy, God, and after God, me."

"There are only two ways for me to leave Chelsea. One way is in June 2010 when I finish my contract and if the club doesn't give me a new one. It is the end of my contract and I am out. The second way is for Chelsea to sack me. The way of the manager leaving the club by deciding to walk away, no chance! I will never do this to Chelsea supporters." - When asked if success in the Carling Cup Final might mean it would be the last trophy he would win for Chelsea.

"As we say in Portugal, they brought the bus and they left the bus in front of the goal." - After a 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

"If he helped me out in training we would be bottom of the league and if I had to work in his world of big business, we would be bankrupt." - On Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

"Pressure? What pressure? Pressure is poor people in the world trying to feed their families. Working from dawn till dusk just to feed their young. There is no pressure in football." - Speaking in a post-match interview.

"Everybody wants Chelsea to lose a game. When they do they should declare a public holiday." - Speaking in a press conference about Chelsea's leading Barclays Premier League start in the 2005-06 season.

"We are on top at the moment but not because of the club's financial power. We are in contention for a lot of trophies because of my hard work."

"I am more scared of bird flu than football. What is football compared with life? I have to buy some masks and stuff - maybe for my team as well." - Speaking soon after H5N1 spread to Britain, and when Chelsea's league lead over Manchester United had slipped to seven points.

"Young players are a little bit like melons. Only when you open and taste the melon are you 100 percent sure that the melon is good. Sometimes you have beautiful melons but they don't taste very good and some other melons are a bit ugly and when you open them, the taste is fantastic." - Mourinho's melon metaphor on young players, 9th June 2007.

"It is omelettes and eggs. No eggs - no omelettes! It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket you have class one, two or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem" - Shorn of the likes of injury victims Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Ricardo Carvalho and Didier Drogba, Mourinho cooked up a surreal analogy ahead of Tuesday's fateful draw with Rosenborg.

Drogba wants to leave 'broken' Chelsea

Talismanic Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has insisted that he wants to quit Chelsea three years after joining the Londoners.

'I want to leave Chelsea. Something is broken with the club,' Drogba told the France Football magazine due to be published on Friday.

Drogba, who has scored 43 goals in the Premier League, was one of the players most affected by former manager Jose Mourinho's departure last month.

'The damage has been big in the dressing room because we know now what happened and who caused Mourinho's departure,' said an unhappy Drogba.

'Nothing can stop me from leaving now.'

The Portuguese coach, who led Chelsea to back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006, has been replaced by Israel's Avram Grant.

Drogba, a £24million signing from Marseille in July 2004, said he has 'wanted to leave Stamford Bridge since the day he arrived' and says he wants a transfer to Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan or Inter Milan.

Home support disappoints Ferguson

Ferguson has previously complained about the lack of crowd noise
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson compared the Old Trafford atmosphere with a "funeral" during his side's 1-0 win over Birmingham City.

Ferguson noticed the lack of voice from the 75,459 crowd after watching the match from the directors' box as part of a two-match touchline ban.

"That was the quietest I have heard the crowd, it was like a funeral," he said.

His comments come seven years after Roy Keane famously dubbed the Old Trafford crowd as the "prawn sandwich brigade".

Carlos Tevez's 25th-minute winner ensured the reigning Premier League champions began 2008 with a victory, but Ferguson was clearly unimpressed with the crowd's role in his team's performance. "The players need the crowd sometimes but the atmosphere inside the ground wasn't good," said the Scot. "There are some situations when we need them to get behind us and give us a lift."

Former Manchester United captain Keane made headlines in 2000 when he laid into sections of the Old Trafford crowd, claiming they couldn't "spell 'football', never mind understand it". He later insisted that he was referring to the crowd in general, not just United's corporate fans.

And Ferguson has complained on previous occasions about the lack of atmosphere at Old Trafford. "I think there have been days like this in the past," said the Scot. "It happened some years ago, when we were dominant. "The crowd come to be entertained but sometimes we need them to help us get the right kind of performance."

Mit Vollgas ins neue Jahr

Fulham - Chelsea 1:2

Zwei Deutsche drückten der Partie in London den Stempel auf: Moritz Volz und Michael Ballack. Volz hatte seinen großen Auftritt schon in der 10. Minute.
