ZitatAs explained in the "What Is a NetLink" section, there is no actual internet service involved when you are playing an opponent. Play over the internet would simply be impossible with the NetLink modem's speed. So gameplay is direct dial
. If you've ever played any real old school PC modem games, you'll know what this is all about. If not, here's a summary. The NetLink modem uses your phone line. When two people want to play a NetLink game, they have to decide in advance who will dial, and who will wait. Let's say person A is dialing. Person A will put enter in Person B's number, and Person B will choose "wait." When person A's modem dials Person B's, the two modems will pick up the rest from there, and start the game. Since you are basically making a phone call to the other person, there is no internet lag, making for a pretty lagless experience. If you have a crappy quality phone line, though, that will definitely affect it. So the direct dial is great, it means you can play against other NetLink users as long as you have a standard phone line, and it's pretty lag free. But oh yes, there is a flip side to this. If you decide you want to play against a person not in your area code, and you do not have a long distance plan with your phone serive, you will be paying Long Distance fees. These can add up if you're not careful. Usually the person dialing has to pay these costs. So think about it.
ZitatThe Saturn NetLink only requires an ISP if you are using the internet browser. If you are simply playing the games, they are direct calls with no ISP.
