    Carmack lügt nicht! :D

    John Carmack:

    Zitat

“We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just…we can’t cut it into a third like that,” he said “We can cut it into two pieces. We’ve got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn’t make an arbitary cut.”

However, Carmack forsees no problem with Doom 4 being multi disk. “Doom 4 is being set up so that it’s almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they’ve got the ability because of the way it’s structured.”

Carmack also compared development on the two consoles. “There’s a little bit more theoretical raw performance on the PS3, so we’ve got a little bit more headroom. The 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3.”

“Everything is designed as a 60Hz game. We expect this to be 60Hz on every supported platform,” says John Carmack, founder and technical director of id Software, as he prepares to show off the 360 and PS3 versions of Rage. And indeed, the PC hardware on which we see the demo running is doing just that, albeit with some heavy screen tearing. “The work remaining is getting it locked so there’s never a dropped frame or a tear, but we’re confident that we’re going to get that,” he continues.

Creative director Tim Willits takes up a 360 pad and programming director Robert Duffy a Sixaxis, and they begin to simultaneously play on the two consoles from where the PC demo started, through a battle with bandits and into Wellspring. The 360 version matches the PC’s 60fps, but the textures on many surfaces currently flick visibly between resolutions as you move toward and away from them, while the PS3’s framerate runs at just 20-30fps. “The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it,” Carmack acknowledges. “The rasteriser is just a little bit slower – no two ways about that. The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that’s where a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3.”

A Mac version has been touted from Rage’s first reveal, too, but Duffy says it’s not being shown today because it’s running behind the other versions by a week. “We have been treating the Mac as a first-class citizen throughout the development,” he assures. “I’m using a Mac as my main development system and Tim is using one as his. We don’t know if we’re going to be Snow Leopard specific yet – we’re waiting on support from Apple – but it’s looking right and we have no major issues with it.”

Rage is designed from the ground up to be a multiplatform production, and id knows the bulk of its market is on console. It’s a decision that has caused something of a change of culture at id. “You can play it with keyboard and mouse on PC, but it’s been a company-wide dictum that Tim will whack you if you’re playing with the mouse,” Carmack says. “The game needs to play well with the controller because most people are going to wind up playing it like that.”

Such concurrent cross-platform development is what id Tech 5 was designed to accomplish. The base data that composes the scenes we see on the PC demo is identical to that we see on PS3 and 360 – and any other platform on which id decides to put Rage – so the comparatively small team of artists and designers that is making Rage’s world is making only one set of assets to fit all.

That world is also made using MegaTextures, a technology which layers the world with enormous single textures of 128,000x128,000 pixels that cover everything in the environment, streaming into memory as needed, rather than creating it with the usual method of using many smaller, discrete textures. It allows artists to be able to create and edit areas of the world without any danger of adversely affecting the game’s performance, and gives them huge opportunity to finesse and add unique detail. “The artists and designers have this ability to go in, build the game, figure out how it’s going to play and then add the personality,” says Carmack. “And the great part is, none of that has any impact on the stability or performance of the game. It’s really, really nice because usually when you go in and do the beauty pass, everything falls apart.”

In other words, it’s id Tech 5’s MegaTextures that are directly responsible for Rage’s distinctive and powerful visual identity. But id faces some challenges with its technology. The first is squeezing it on to the game disc. A single uncompressed 128,000x128,000 pixel texture weighs in at around 120GB, and the game as it stands when we visit is, Carmack says, “probably a couple of terabytes. A lot of that winds up being stuff that the player never sees – the back of buildings or mountaintops that no trails lead up to – so you can throw that away, and the compression gives you 20-to-one-ish over the whole base. But it’s still going to be a challenge. The sweet spot would be one Blu-ray [50GB], or four regular DVDs [8.5GB each], and Doom 4 may wind up being that.”

Potentially, each version of the game will have to be compressed for its host’s storage medium using an automated process that will take a couple of days to complete. “We have the option of maybe providing a higher quality dataset for the PS3 with a little bit less compression if we don’t mind processing everything separately for that,” Carmack says. “Or then there’d be the idea possibly of having some super-platinum edition on the PC that’s just an incredibly rich dataset, if somebody doesn’t mind putting out 60 gigs or something for it.”

The second problem is due to the smoke and mirrors id Tech 5 employs. Because many lighting effects are calculated when an artist inserts an asset into a scene, like a car throwing a shadow on to a dusty roadway, id Tech 5 cannot handle global dynamic lighting. Which also means it can’t properly depict a day-night cycle, with shadows moving as the sun shifts position. We see various smaller-scale dynamic lighting effects, such as shadows thrown by NPCs and a swinging light in a doorway, but they contrast with the far subtler shadows thrown by still objects in a scene. We also see the game’s palette cycle from the hard, bright exterior tones and darker, colourised interior ones as Willits enters and exits buildings in Wellspring.

The irony is that the previous-generation technology that drove Doom 3 ran almost without smoke and mirrors. Though the lack of global dynamic lighting isn’t an issue for Rage itself, it’s hard to see id Tech 5, a new engine that works on different principles to any other in use in games today, being an easy fit for many developers, despite all of its great benefits for production.
