Closing Comments
If you didn't like the first one, there's probably nothing new or different enough to pull you in this time. The love story adds some dramatic depth to Max's haunting story, and somehow makes what's going on more important and interesting. Wreaking havoc is nice, but it's great to also have a love interest complicating things, and Mona Sax is definitely up to the task. The visuals are excellent, the voice work is superior to what we usually get dealt in the action genre, and I only wish the game was a bit longer. A lot longer actually, but it's more because this kind of game is such a rare find than because that find is relatively meager.

Another Take
Max Payne 2 is certainly an improvement over the original, but I think ultimately this comes off as a better realization of the concepts introduced two years ago. I was among the millions blown away by the introduction of Bullet Time in a videogame when Max Payne came out. This time around I'm impressed by the improvements the developers have made and the deeper adventures of everybody's favorite rogue cop. I too feel that fans of the first game will appreciate this one, especially since there seems to be a lot more effort invested in the console versions. There isn't quite enough long-term value in this game, in my opinion, but what is here is very well executed and presented paynefully. And that's a good thing.

You really have to pay attention this time around, but there's lots here to grab you and keep your interest.
8.0 Graphics
Very nice textures but things are a little too blocky for this to feel like an Xbox game. It's PC roots are very evident.
9.0 Sound
The sound plays a huge role in this game and almost upstages the stars of the game.
9.0 Gameplay
It's still a unique action game that demands a new skill set even if every other action title has bitten Bullet Time.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
It's solo only and much time is spent absorbing the story. Single digit hours to finish a game is a little too short for us.
